Custom Shade Sails for Mackay Homes & Businesses

The best shade sail starts with the space it needs to cover.

Sun position, span, existing structures, available fixing points, clearance and how the area is used all influence the finished design. We work through those details locally rather than trying to make every property fit a standard package.

Residential

Pools, decks, patios, entertaining areas, driveways, carports, courtyards and backyard play areas.

Schools & Childcare

Playgrounds, sandpits, outdoor learning areas, seating areas and larger school shade structures.

Commercial

Commercial properties, community facilities, car parks and other purpose-built shade applications.

Replacement Sails

New sails manufactured to suit suitable existing posts and fixing points.

Posts & Fixings

New posts, brackets, structural fixing points and tensioning hardware where required.

Repairs & Restitching

Assessment of stitching, hems, corners and fittings where the existing fabric remains serviceable.

Local manufacture

Made in Mackay by the People Who Install Them

Your sail is cut and stitched in our Andergrove workshop using professional-grade materials and industrial machinery.

Because we also install our local projects, the sail is made with an understanding of how it will actually behave once tensioned — how the corners carry load, how the edges sit, where wear can occur and how the structure works as a whole.

That connection between manufacture and installation is particularly important when the job involves unusual spans, existing structures or custom fixing points.

From site to finished sail

How a Local Shade Sail Project Works

01 · SITE

Measure & Assess

We look at the area, sun coverage, usable fixing points and what the finished shade needs to achieve.

02 · PLAN

Design & Structure

Sail shape, height, posts, brackets, clearances and structural requirements are worked through for the site.

03 · MAKE

Manufactured Locally

The sail is cut, reinforced and stitched in our Andergrove workshop to suit the measured installation.

04 · INSTALL

Fit & Tension

We install and tension the sail locally so the finished structure works as intended.

Built beyond installation day

Materials Chosen for Long-Term Outdoor Use

We select the fabric and construction to suit the job rather than treating every sail the same. Most residential work uses professional-grade Z16 shade fabric, with heavier E32 available where larger spans or demanding applications call for it. Waterproof shade sails can also be made where the design and required fall make them suitable.

Professional Shade Fabrics

UV-stabilised fabric selected according to the span, exposure and intended use of the sail.

Premium Thread & Reinforcement

Coats Helios P UV-resistant thread, reinforced load points and construction intended for long-term outdoor exposure.

Quality Fittings & Tension

Appropriate stainless hardware, properly shaped edges and fittings selected to suit the individual installation.

Capability at scale

Schools, Commercial & Community Shade

Our shade sail work extends well beyond residential backyards.

GP Motor Trimming undertakes larger shade structures for schools, childcare facilities, playgrounds, commercial properties and community spaces throughout the Mackay region.

These projects can involve larger spans, heavier fabric specifications, structural posts, specialised hardware and engineering or approval requirements. Geoff is a QBCC-licensed Builder — Restricted to Special Structures (Shade Sails), and GP Motor Trimming is a QBuild registered supplier.

More than the fabric

Posts, Structures, Engineering & Approvals

A tensioned shade sail places significant loads on its fixing points, so posts, footings, brackets and structural connections are an important part of the finished installation.

Depending on the project, we can assist with new posts, structural fixing points, brackets, hardware and engineering or approval requirements.

Requirements vary depending on the structure and site, so each project is assessed individually.

Existing structures

Shade Sail Repairs & Replacement

An older shade sail does not automatically need replacing. If the fabric is still sound, restitching or repairing a worn area may provide considerably more useful life.

  • Failed or deteriorating stitching
  • Worn edges and hems
  • Damaged corners
  • Hardware and fitting issues
  • Lost or incorrect tension
  • Replacement sails for existing fixing points

Cyclone Removal & Refitting

Having a removal plan is part of owning a shade sail in Mackay.

Fabric shade sails are designed for normal outdoor conditions, not to remain installed through cyclones or destructive winds. When severe weather threatens, sails should be removed early while conditions are still safe.

For local customers, we offer shade sail removal and refitting where availability allows, and we can explain how your sail comes down so you know what is involved before cyclone conditions are approaching.

Never attempt to remove a tensioned shade sail once weather conditions have already become unsafe.
